Penrith in Bloom




Here is a link to an amazing video.    The community of Penrith, a small town close to my home, have achieved amazing horticultural results and this year won two Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Outstanding Community Awards for "Cultivating your Community" and  "Nourishing your Community".

The Garden of Eden-Penrith Community Gardeners led by Joan Robinson also achived an Achievement Award for "Nature Friendly Gardening".

Penrith within the District Council of Eden is the only area within the UK to gain two awards.

The first secular reference to Gardening is from the Assyrians in about 3000 BC.   Hunting parks were stocked with wild beasts for the sport of Kings and planted with every known tree.   The Persians who over-ran Assyria were dazzled and delighted by these Parks and made their own wherever they settled.   Called Pardes (Persian for Park).    Later Pardes was translated into Greek and became Paradise.    Eventually the idea spread into Europe. The Best Places to see snowdrops in Cumbria and the Lake District

  Snowdrop walks in winter are increasingly popular. Cumbria hosts many wonderful places to see swathes of snowdrops.    Grizedale Forest, Tarn Howes, Grasmere, Sizergh Castle, Dalemain, Dalston or Brockhole, the Lake District National Park's Visitor Centre, all of these places you can visit tomorrow that produce breath taking rewards. Why, how and when did the Victorians Cut Grass?

The nineteenth century was the century of the new.    A significant period for gardening in Britain.  There were new tools for cutting, pruning digging and weeding.   The lawnmower was invented in 1831 by Edward Beard Budding (1796-1846), an engineer in a textile factory who adapted a cloth-shearing machine to provide the perfect smooth lawn.    In 1842 he invented the adjustable spanner. The large mower on great estates was pulled by a horse wearing leather shoes, to protect the close cut sward.    The smaller version  was easy to push and adopted throughout the country in small city gardens. The Horticultural Society became Royal in 1861 when Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert (1819-1861), obtained a charter for what we now know as the RHS.
